Rat Terrier Gear Guides: Start Here
The index to all of our Rat Terrier gear guides, plus how to measure your dog before you buy anything.
This is the starting point for all of our gear guides. Each one explains what a Rat Terrier actually needs from that piece of equipment, how to measure, and the trade-offs between types, so you can choose something that fits your dog rather than whatever is at the top of a list.
How our gear guides work
- We compare types of product and explain fit, sizing and limitations.
- We do not claim to have tested individual products, and we do not publish ratings or prices.
- Links to Amazon open current search results, so the prices and reviews you see are Amazon’s own.
- Those links are affiliate links. More on that in our affiliate disclosure and how we write gear guides.
Walking and travel
- How to choose a harness. Types, measuring, and escape-proof fit for a deep chest and narrow waist.
- Leashes and long lines. The two leashes that cover nearly everything.
- Travel and car safety gear. Crates, carriers and vehicle harnesses, and why crash testing matters.
Home and rest
- Choosing a crate. Sizing for miniatures and standards, and wire versus plastic.
- Dog beds. Bolster, cave, orthopedic and more, for a thin-coated dog that likes to be warm.
- Senior comfort. Supportive beds, ramps, traction and warmth.
Play and training
- Toys for a clever, busy Rat Terrier. Matching toy types to terrier instincts.
- Enrichment. Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats and free scent games.
- Training gear. The short list for reward-based training.
Care
- Grooming tools. Five items that cover a short, shedding coat.
- Puppy supplies checklist. What to buy before pickup day, and what to skip.
Sizing a Rat Terrier
The breed spans roughly 10 to 25 pounds and 10 to 18 inches at the shoulder, with a deep chest and a tucked waist. That range is too wide for one-size advice, so every guide starts with how to measure your own dog. Our Gear Size Visualizer turns those measurements into starting estimates for crates, beds and harnesses.
Before you buy anything
- Measure first. Chest girth, neck, length and height.
- Read the size chart for that specific product. Sizes are not standard between brands.
- Check the return policy in case the fit is wrong.
- Read recent reviews from owners of similar-sized dogs.
- Buy less. Most dogs need fewer things than the internet suggests.
