The two leashes that cover nearly everything, how the types compare, and how to use a long line safely.

Two leashes cover almost everything a Rat Terrier owner needs: a fixed 4 to 6 foot leash for everyday walks, and a 15 to 30 foot long line for recall practice and safe freedom in open spaces. Keep both light, because a heavy clip swinging against a 15-pound dog is uncomfortable.
We have not tested individual products. This guide covers types and what to look for, with links to current options.
Key points
- A fixed-length leash gives the most control near traffic.
- Choose narrow webbing and a small, strong clip for a small dog.
- Attach long lines to the back ring of a harness, never to a collar.
- Retractable leashes are a poor match for a fast, prey-driven terrier.
- Check clips and stitching regularly.
Leash types compared
| Type | Best use | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed 4–6 ft | Daily walks, training, busy areas | Predictable length and good control | Limited room to roam |
| Long line, 15–30 ft | Recall practice, fields, beaches | Freedom with a safety backstop | Tangles; needs open space and practice to handle |
| Hands-free or waist | Hiking and jogging with a trained dog | Hands free; often has a shock-absorbing section | A lunge pulls at your waist |
| Double-ended | Front-and-back clip harnesses | Steering and brakes together | More to manage |
| Retractable | Rarely recommended | Variable length | Little control; thin cord can burn or cut; teaches pulling |
Fixed 6 ft leash, narrow webbing
Best for: Everyday walks
Advantages
- Simple and reliable
- Light enough for a small dog
- Inexpensive
Limitations
- No extra features
- Nylon can be hard on hands if the dog pulls
Half-inch or five-eighths webbing with a small bolt snap suits most Rat Terriers.
Long training line
Best for: Recall training and safe off-leash style exercise
Advantages
- Lets the dog run and sniff
- Essential for proofing recall
- Coated versions do not soak up water
Limitations
- Can tangle around legs
- Gloves are a good idea
Clip to the back of a harness, and let it trail rather than holding it tight.
What to look for
- Weight. The lighter the better for small dogs.
- Clip. A small, solid bolt snap or locking clip. Check it closes fully.
- Material. Nylon is cheap and strong, biothane wipes clean and does not hold water, leather softens with age.
- Handle. Padded handles help if your dog lunges.
- Reflective stitching for dark mornings and evenings.
Using a long line safely
- Use it only in open areas, away from roads, other dogs and trees.
- Never wrap it around your hand.
- Keep slack out from under the dog’s legs.
- Start with 15 feet and work up.
