How We Write Gear Guides
Our gear guides are buying advice, not product reviews. This page explains exactly what that means, so you know what you are getting.
What we do
- Explain what the breed needs. A Rat Terrier is a 10 to 25 pound dog with a deep chest, a narrow waist, a thin coat, a strong jaw for its size, and a talent for escaping. Each guide starts there.
- Compare types, not brands. For example, Y-front versus step-in versus vest harnesses: what each is good for and where it falls short.
- Show you how to measure and check fit.
- List limitations alongside advantages, for every type.
- Draw on published guidance from veterinary and safety organizations where it exists, and cite it.
What we do not do
- We do not test individual products and we never say that we have.
- We do not publish star ratings, review counts, prices or stock levels.
- We do not use “best” lists, awards, countdown timers or scarcity messages.
- We do not copy retailer reviews or product descriptions.
- We do not suggest that a product treats or cures a health problem.
How the Amazon links work
Buttons and links marked as going to Amazon open Amazon search results for that type of product, in a new tab. The prices, sizes and customer reviews you see there are Amazon’s own and are current at the moment you look.
These are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. They are marked so search engines know they are sponsored. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.
How to use our guides
- Read the guide to decide which type suits your dog.
- Measure your dog.
- Follow the link, then compare specific products using the manufacturer’s size chart and recent reviews from owners of similar-sized dogs.
- Check the return policy before you order.
If we ever test products
If we carry out hands-on testing in future, the article will say so plainly, describe how the testing was done, and show our own photographs of the products.
